In March 2024, Sarouem provided a 3-day training on Peacemaking Circles hosted by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office in partnership with Day Won Utah. The group of participants included about 50 people consisting of community members who have been impacted by the criminal justice system, and professionals who work in this area.
“There are no words to describe what happened, but it did happen, and it was profound. Those who were there know the feeling,” shares Saroeum Phoung.
Sharing this space with a diverse community of passionate individuals willing to change the system inspired me and my work in government, specifically as it aligns with my role managing the Salt Lake City Racial Equity in Policing Commission. I truly respect the innovative approach towards restorative justice that the DA’s Office is actively working towards and the leadership of Sim Gill and his team. It is amazing to be a part of this collaboration and continue the development of this work together in community, shared Michelle Mooney, MA CDP
